Original stone finish (17)

This Green Man has a youthful and very realistically carved face and there is definitely a spark of mischief in those eyes! The green man symbol pre-dates Christianity and probably represents fertility. He is associated with the traditional Maypole and Morris dancing. Having been adopted by Christianity, green men in various forms can be found carved in almost every English cathedral.
