This, the westernmost boss in the nave, is widely considered
to be the finest boss in Britain. It depicts the murder of Thomas a Becket
in Canterbury Cathedral at the hands of King Henry II's knights in 1170.
The figures are accurately carved and arranged with a fine sense of overall
design. This boss has been painted since World War II, but was in all
probability painted when originally carved. |
