Stone finish (31) |
This boss, which has very realistically carved oak leaves
and still retains its original colouring, is unusually well documented.
It was carved in 1307 by a Mr William Montacute from "just over the border"
in Somerset, at a cost of just 5/- (25 Pence in modern currency!!) to
the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral. Both Sampson and the Lion are
realistically carved and arranged to form a well balanced design. |
