Original stone finish (38)

This bearded and capped head, carved in relief, is believed to be that of a prophet. It probably formed part of a Tree of Jesse on a stone screen built across the choir under the direction of Master Mason William the Englishman. When the screen was demolished over one hundred years later the stones were re-used as masonry with the carvings hidden inside the wall. This head came to light again during work on the west wall of the great cloister in 1964. Sadly, since then the lower right hand corner has been further damaged; this reproduction shows it as found.
