Original stone finish (42) |
Woodchester Park Mansion was begun in 1856 and inexplicably
abandoned, unfinished, in 1870, since when it has remained almost undisturbed
in its secret Cotswold valley, as though the builders had just left -
intending to return shortly. Every stage of construction, from bare brick
walls to the finest completed stone vaulting can be seen, allowing a unique
insight into traditional building techniques and craftsmanship at their
finest. The mansion was designed by Benjamin Bucknall for the wealthy
Catholic merchant William Leigh. Local stone was used throughout and French
stone masons executed much of the work.
This Green Man (who has occasionally been likened to Star Wars' Darth
Vader!) is the pair to No. 84.
