Original verdigris finish (67) |
This bell, the old "third bell" now on display in Worcester Cathedral cloisters, was cast by William Burford of London circa 1374. William Burford worked between 1371 and 1392 and only twenty two of his bells are known to exist. The inscription on this bell, "IN HONORE SCI WOLSTANI EPI", when translated reads, "In honour of St. Wulstan, Bishop". The dedication to St. Wulstan, prior of Worcester from 1012 to 1095, is unique. The lip of this bell has been quite crudely cut at some stage, this would have been done to sharpen the bell's pitch and tune it to the other bells. The three round marks at the very top of the bell show where the molten bell metal was poured into the sand mould when the bell was cast. St Wulstan's bell measures 32 inches (812 mm) in diameter. The St. Wulstan's bell is sold exclusively through Worcester Cathedral: worcestercathedral@compuserve.com
