Original stone finish (96) |
Anyone visiting the outstandingly
lovely cathedral of St.Davids will need to be quite sharp eyed to spot
this charming little Green Man. He lives in between the carved stone chevrons
on one of the arches at the north east end of the nave. Probably frequently
overlooked, he's been looking down at worshipers, pilgrims and visitors
(not to mention the occasional horde of marauding iconoclasts, reformers,
soldiers and builders, the collapse of the tower and the earthquake that
twisted the whole cathedral!), for some 800 years from his little nook,
so I'd imagine he's become a pretty wise and shrewd fellow.
The carving style of this very early example of the Green Man is simple
but delightful. He has a disarmingly youthful face with what is probably
a deceptively innocent expression. Definitely one of my personal favourites.
